Business Partner Retreat · Hocking Hills, Ohio

Two days on the partnership, not the business.

Shared Horizon is a two-night retreat for business partners, built by two business partners who needed it. Look back, clear the air, and leave with a three-year picture you both signed.

Why it exists

Two business partners built this to solve their own problem.

Shared Horizon started with us, Timmy McCarthy and Chase Beach. We are business partners, and like most partners we spent every meeting on the business and almost none on the partnership that runs it.

We knew we needed to get together and talk about the high-level stuff: where this is going, what each of us wants, the things we had been meaning to say. We never made the time. Something more urgent always won.

But every time we did get away and talk it through, we walked away saying the same thing:

“Man, we should do this more often.”

So we built the thing that makes us do it. Two days, set in an order that works, with the prompts, the walks, and the fire already planned, and a quarterly tune-up so it does not take another year to happen again. This is the retreat we wanted for ourselves. Now we are opening it to other partners.

What it is

You built something real together. When did you last look at the two of you?

Shared Horizon is two days set aside for the partnership itself. The first day looks back and clears the air. The second day builds what comes next. Every hard conversation starts alone on paper, and the order of the days is deliberate.

It runs on its own. A printed workbook for each of you, with the walk questions and the protocols in it, takes you through every block, in a private cabin with a sauna, a cold plunge, and a fire pit. The big paper, markers, and phone box are waiting. You do not need a facilitator, and you do not need to plan a thing.

A signed picture

How it runs

Look back, clear the air, then build.

Day one

Foundation

Warmth, then honesty, then warmth again. By the fire tonight you should feel more chosen by each other than when you arrived, and every elephant should be named.

  1. 1Phones down, and the agreements you both say yes to
  2. 2The look back, alone, on paper
  3. 3The origin walk: why you chose each other
  4. 4Elephants before boogeymen: the unsaid things, said fairly
  5. 5Heat and cold: sauna and plunge, no business talk
  6. 6Dinner, then the fire: what I admire in you

Day two

Creation

It starts ten years out with no constraints and narrows all day, until you hold a three-year picture, a refreshed agreement, and the next twelve months.

  1. 1My ten years, alone, in the present tense
  2. 2The horizon walk: two pictures, side by side
  3. 3The blank page: what would we build from scratch?
  4. 4Drawing the shared horizon: one three-year picture
  5. 5The partnership agreement, refreshed
  6. 6The next twelve months, and a letter to open in a year
  7. 7The fire close: commitments read aloud, the picture signed

Last morning

The send-off

Slow on purpose. A rhythm to take home, not just a high.

  1. 1One word each for how you are leaving
  2. 2What you will tell your team on Monday, and what you will not
  3. 3Your first quarterly tune-up, on both calendars
  4. 4Phones back, last
A mowed trail through the autumn woods at Hugga
The walks: side by side is easier than face to face.
The long table in the Prairie cabin
The work room: a long table, big paper, and two pens.
The cabin sauna and cold plunge
Heat and cold, after the hardest conversation.

The agreements

Four rules that make honesty safe.

You both say yes to each one out loud on the first afternoon, before any of the work starts.

  1. 1

    Write before you share.

Every big conversation starts on paper, alone.

  2. 2

    Reflect before you respond.

Say back what you heard before you answer it.

  3. 3

What is said here stays here.

What is decided here goes home.

  4. 4

Either of you can call a pause.

Pick the word on the first afternoon. When it is said, you stop for ten minutes, no questions asked.

What you leave with

Everything in your own words.

  • The sentence that finishes “We started this because…” in your own words
  • Your elephants, each one landed: resolved, a next step with a date, or carried into the agreement
  • A three-year picture you both signed by the fire
  • A one-page partnership agreement in plain language: roles, decision rights, how you disagree
  • Three to five shared commitments for the next 12 months, each with an owner and a first step
  • A letter to the partnership that we mail back to you in a year

Every quarter

The tune-up

A short ritual you learn on the last morning: the picture, the commitments, one elephant each. The first date goes on both calendars before you leave.

After 30 and 90 days

Two check-ins

We check in at 30 and 90 days to ask how the commitments you wrote are going. With a coach, a coach call comes first, about ten days after you’re home.

In a year

The letters, and the return

We mail back the letters you wrote to the partnership, right around the time to plan your return for the next one.

What it costs

It starts with a cabin.

Book any of our four cabins for two nights and add Shared Horizon at checkout. The price below is on top of your stay.

Self-guided

$99plus your cabin

You run it yourselves. Everything is planned.

  • Two printed Shared Horizon workbooks, one each, with both your names
  • Two days already planned: the look back, the walks, the elephants, the three-year picture
  • Big paper, markers, a phone box, and letter envelopes set out in the cabin

Who it is for

Partners who are good, and want to stay good.

Shared Horizon is built for partners who want to tune up something that works: founders a few years in, owners planning the next chapter, a visionary and the operator who makes it real.

If the two of you are in an active dispute or working out how to separate, a weekend like this is not the right tool. A mediator or a partnership attorney is the right first call.

Bringing three or four partners? Book the cabin and tell us, and we’ll sort out a workbook for each of you.
